All true monsters are born in the land of fog and dreams.

Today I made a couple of sketches of environments based on photos taken by Sabrina Kamal during her travels. It’s nice to not be at work and get to play a bit.

Gone Fishing

The above was a real quick skech, less than 30 minutes.

Environment Sketch - Sunset Mountain Chain

This one took me close to 2 hours, ended up repainting a large section smack in the middle due to me putting a tree there and not working with layers… yeah, stoopid… then deciding I don’t like the tree. Anyways, liked the way it turned out so I’m posting! Need to do more!

This one sensed danger and is running away!

A New Dawn - Dragon rises out of rocks pencil sketch

Spooked by the tiny human hunter, puny dragon flees for dear life!

This is one of a series of new sketches where I’m attempting to draw scenes including environments rather than just characters. Pencil sketch I made last week, the actual drawing is tiny, only 3″ across.

The following image is in line with some swords and sorcery. Two magical warriors meet in the forest and this scene depicts the start of their battle.

Swords and Sorcery - Magical Battle in the Forest - Pencil Sketch

This is a pencil sketch, the lighting was altered in Photoshop in order to emphasize the magic beam. The whole sketch is very small, maybe 3×3 inches. Hope you like!

Greetings folks, this is pretty much the second round of the Sketches of Doom! I’ve really been meaning to show more of these but many times they get lost and/or don’t get scanned. Some of these could be found in my notes and on floating pieces of paper, generally these are all very small, less than 3 inches diagonal.

Fishing madness! I’ve been working on a portrait of a warcraft character, there was a story about this guy fishing and out of imagination I made some fishing scenes. The final artwork actually won’t feature him fishing but these were great fun to create.

Ink sketch of a character fishing

Below is an ink sketch of a landscape featuring a lonely tree and a character watching an Earth Dragon “swim” by in its element. The only part of the dragon which is visible in this image are the spikes protruding out of the ground in the lower left part of the drawing.

Last but not least, is a pencil sketch of a character against a small mountain with a mechanical tower on the top.

Well, these are not really sketches of DOOM. Instead they were inspired by the madness you can see at one of my favorite recently discovered websites: http://www.sketchpadofdoom.blogspot.com/

After seeing the title post on the above website I immediately said “FUUUK MI” and went off to make some quick sketches. Here are the results:

Environment Sketch 1

Environment Sketch 2

Environment Sketch 3

Environment Sketch 4

Yes, that’s right, the last one features that pesky Pixar lamp!

I am really weak on drawing environments, partly because they never excited me in the past but recently I’ve found an urge to draw them like never before.

Environment Painting 01

This first one was the result of brush testing, I did not use a reference. I’ve found that placing a character into the environment really helps to set the eye to the correct (or bad) scale of the scene.

Environment Painting 01

The second one continued the brush testing but this time I did use a reference.

Both of these were what I would consider speed paintings as I used about 20 minutes on each, maybe 15 on the first but I didn’t use a timer. Anyways, I’ve recently not been posting anything because of a trip back to Bulgaria, it’s time to end the drought and hopefully more updates will come soon!
