December 2008

Here is a recent drawing I decided to push a bit more and to create a full scene.

Hellguard

The drawing above depicts a demonic guardian of Hell, wielding a possessed weapon and armored in gold.

A few weeks ago I was showing my friend some of the demons drawn by Cole Eastburn. Click here to check out his portfolio, he’s one of my favorite concept artists. Anyways, his demons motivated me to make the pencil sketch and then as I colored it I tried to achieve a similar look.

Work in Progress:

I guess the following sequence of images can be used as a tutorial or to simply give some insight into how the final image came to be.

Work in progress animation of the Hellguard drawing

I hope this is somewhat helpful to those trying to learn about my process. As you can see this started with a fairly loose pencil sketch which I didn’t change much even in the final rendition besides adding colors and doing some blending to make it look smoother. Originally I was aiming for a more blue-green scheme but as I tried to push it I was not pleased with the results and simply backed out to a more yellow and red palette.

Comments and critique are always appreciated!

The image of a god.

Olympian

This was a pencil sketch which I painted over in Photoshop. The image was unreferenced but inspired by a statue I saw during my trip to Russia in November 2008.

Yet another naked girl. This one was completely unreferenced, actually I started this drawing in 2007 but never really pushed it. The original is somewhere in my Sketchbook on CA.

Hooters & Wings

The image is completely digital and drawn in Photoshop. I had a background and a whole scene going but I like the character better and that’s the only layer you see here.

About as cliche as you can get with art, I love it!

This goes perfectly well with my recent theme of Naked Women with Swords.

Tits & Spikes

While the artwork is my own from an unreferenced quick sketch I ended up going back and very closely referencing a photo of Luba Shumeyko once again. I’m not thrilled about the colors but I need to learn so here it is colors and all. The background was originally painted with trees but I once again opted out for a barren landscape which seems to contrast the fleshy foregrounds (yes, that’s a plural of rounds…)
